San Antonio
In the late 1980's Hardy Sanders and Warren Bates knew that if they wanted to grow
their company, they needed to expand its geographic reach. With increasing
cross-border trade and the quickly growing industrial base in South Texas and
Northern Mexico, San Antonio was a natural choice. Linda Timmons, our current
President and CEO, was, at the time, Assistant General Manager for North Richland Hills. She
was sent to San Antonio in 1990 to start a plant and expand our operations.
After choosing a location and hiring several people, the San Antonio division
was on its way. This operation grew very quickly and, before long, was in need
of a larger facility. In 1999, a brand-new, state-of-the-art facility in South San Antonio was built
with over 100,000 square feet of production space and 9,000 square feet of
office space.
At the time, the plant was built in the middle of sprawling corn fields in South
San Antonio. This is now one of the fastest growing commercial areas in and around
San Antonio due to the proximity of Toyota's new truck assembly plant. Located in the
Freeport Trade Zone, Bates' San Antonio plant was strategically built to allow
for expansion. The plant is designed to expand over three phases in order to
keep costs down and use only what is currently necessary. Although still in
phase 1, the next phase will be to double the size of the manufacturing space
(to over 200,000 sq. ft.) for a new corrugator. The final phase will be to
finish the office space on the second level in order to double its size as
well.
Most recently, San Antonio acquired a jumbo flexo folder-gluer which will help it
to meet the needs of the growing bulk bin and large box market. Being one of
the only companies in the region with this type of machine, Bates San Antonio can
run large boxes and bulk bins which specifically help our produce and funtiture manufacturing clients. Corrugated pallets, a cost effective alternative to wooden pallets, are manufactured at this this facility and can be customized to meet your company's specific needs.
